Spring Into a New You: “Today’s Your Day!”

Ahhhh… spring has finally sprung!  I’m basking in the bliss of fresh air blowing in through the windows, sunshine warming me, and greenery sprouting up everywhere.  It is safe to say I officially have spring fever!!!  Spring is such a great time of year… everything is reborn and you just feel so good to be alive!  And if you’re following along with my Spring Cleaning Series, you know that it is a great time to start fresh!

 

Spring into a New You

 

 

Just yesterday, my son and I were sitting outside enjoying the beautiful day and he looked at me and said “tell me the story of spring, mommy!”  (he always wants to know the ‘story’ of everything)  So I launched into a brief story of spring; the long, cold, and snowy season is over and the sun comes out and starts to warm everything up.  New life begins to grow in preparation of big things to come for the rest of the season into summer.  He was thrilled; what a great story!

 

Needless to say, my ‘deep talk’ with my three year old got me thinking, as these talks usually do.  Spring is a time of new life.  So often, we just associate spring with spring cleaning, typically our houses.  But why not spring clean our lives?  Why not take spring as an opportunity for new life, a stepping stone on the way to big things?

 

I am sure each of us has a ‘some day’ item just waiting to be checked off of our list.  I am sure we all have one bad habit that we know needs to go.  In one way or another, we are all in need of a life refresher.  Spring is the time to do it, and spring is here!

 

TODAY’S YOUR DAY!

We have a phrase in our house, with a somewhat silly origin.  “Today’s your day!”  A quick background: my son is part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.  If you are not familiar, it is fabulous; from birth to age five, once a month your child will receive a free book in the mail.

 

My son knows that the books come in the mailbox.  Our mailbox is across the street, so we usually stop in the car on the way home.  One day, he asked if there was a book waiting for him.  My husband checked and said “nope, I guess today’s not your day!”  Since that moment, my son always asks “is today my day???”  Finally, one day we pulled up and a book was waiting for him.  So my husband told him “today’s your day!”

 

Now, we use that phrase all of the time.  If we are having a great day or have something great planned, we will tell Preston that today is his day!  And sometimes we will take turns, and sometimes Bob and Preston share the day.  And if it’s a bad day, we simply say, “I guess today’s not your day.”  In any case, if “today’s your day” in our house, it is a very exciting moment!  The world is your oyster!

 

I share this story with you to inspire you.  Tell yourself that today is your day.  Today is the day that you will make the first step towards change.  The first step towards ‘new life.’

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH???

What’s that ‘one big thing?’  What have you been putting off?  What have you only dreamed of accomplishing in life?  Friends, today is the day.  Today is the day that you will make your dreams a reality.  Write it down.  Post it for the world to see.  Create a vision board.  Whatever you need to do to make it tangible, there’s no holding back!

 

HOW WILL YOU ACCOMPLISH IT?

Make a list.  Make it as detailed as possible.  I love checking things off of a list.  And the more specific you get, the more items you will get to check off your list.  I know that if I can check tiny things off, then I stay motivated to keep going.  Make the number one item on your list something that you will accomplish TODAY.  If you don’t do it today, chances are you will never start.  And remember, TODAY IS YOUR DAY!

 

SET REALISTIC GOALS

Do not set yourself up for failure!  Nothing can be more demoralizing than envisioning your ‘grand plan,’ diving in totally unprepared, and immediately failing miserably.  Maybe you’ve always dreamed of running a marathon, but you haven’t run a mile since high school gym class.  Start small.  The marathon can still be your ‘end goal,’ but be realistic about it.  Start with a 5k, then a 10k, then a half marathon, then the big time marathon.  Not only will you set yourself up for success by creating a realistic game plan, you will also get the satisfaction of hitting other goals along the way.

TUNE OUT THE WHITE NOISE

It’s inevitable.  Whenever you try to accomplish something major in your life, there will be naysayers.  There will be doubters.  There may even be haters.  Tune them out or use it as motivation to push yourself!  I know for me, the biggest distraction I need to tune out is myself.  You may know what I’m talking about; that tiny (or not so tiny) voice in our head that tells us we can’t do it.  The voice that has probably held us back to this point.  Shut it off and shut it out.  It’s time for a new beginning; start by kicking your own self-doubt to the curb!

 

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE MINDED INDIVIDUALS

Just as you want to tune out any negativity, it is equally important to surround yourself with positivity.  Find a person or group of people who will support you every step of the way.  They will be your biggest cheerleaders through victory, and the ones to pick you up when you stumble.  Positivity breeds positivity; surround yourself with good energy to keep motivated and encouraged.  Share your dreams with others to turn them into reality.

 

THERE WILL BE SETBACKS

There will be setbacks, and that’s ok.  DO NOT give up!  Remember, if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.  Let yourself have a bad day.  Let yourself get off track.  Don’t beat yourself up over it.  Instead, use it as a stepping stool to move on.  Start the next day fresh.  If something on your ‘list’ does not go as planned, cross it off, try something new.  You are the author of your own life; edit it as you choose!

CELEBRATE SUCCESSES

You are working hard, celebrate those successes, no matter how ‘small’ they may seem!  Maybe you’re finally diving in to a fitness program with a goal of losing twenty pounds.  You better be celebrating for every single pound you lose along the way!  It’s not about the end result, it’s about what you achieve along the way and the work you put in.  Your dedication to new life is cause for celebration itself!  Make your celebrations as big or as small as you like.  Splash it across social media, or just celebrate with close family and friends.  Whatever your style is, it’s all about you!

 

DREAM BIG

Dream big; the sky is the limit!  Don’t limit yourself just to what you want to accomplish today.  Spring is a time of rebirth.  A time for something new, in preparation for the big picture ahead.  Look at your life in the same light.  You CAN and WILL accomplish whatever you set your mind to.  Your only limit is yourself.  So dream big friends, and together we will accomplish great things.  Spring is only one season.  Now is the time to be reborn and set the path for the rest of your life.

When I took the plunge to start This Happy House, it was just one piece in the path that I have laid out in front of myself.  I have a big vision and big goals.  This Happy House is just the starting point, and I am so excited to see what the future holds!  There have been roadblocks.  There have been setbacks.  Things have not always gone to plan.  Some days I wonder if I am in over my head.  But I celebrate the victories, check another item off of my list, and use these small successes to push me forward.  I encourage you to do the same!

 

We only get one life.  It’s time to start living the life you have only dreamed of.  It may be the most challenging thing you have ever done, it may be a bit risky, but it will be so rewarding.  And friends, I promise you that it will be worth it.  You just need to take the first step and tell yourself that “today is your day!’

  • I love this! I have found that when I think positively my life is so much better! When I hang around negative people and have negative thoughts life seems to go badly at every turn. There really is power in positive thinking! “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.”–Henry Ford

    • I’m glad you enjoyed this! I definitely agree that how you handle life is definitely all in your mindset! I think it’s so important to take just a couple of minutes at the beginning of every day to get your head on straight with the right attitude.

I find if I start my day with a gratitude exercise (think of all the things I’m grateful for) and then visualize what I’m wanting to achieve in my life as though it’s already happened and then think about what I want to achieve for today… I have a much more happy and productive day! So true about finding other positive people to be around 😊

  • Love the article and your perspective on the topic. Only aspect I may not entirely resonate with is that idea of being realistic. I know that’s what the masses teach and it’s the logical way to approach things but if anything – I am proof that being unrealistic is the best way to manifest big dreams 🙂

  • Yes, yes, and yes!!! This is the second post I’ve read today that encourages the list making/goal setting so clearly I’m meant to do it! Thank you! I love list making and the satisfaction of “checking them off”. Adding it to my to do list now.

  • I’ve been thinking a lot about how today being a good day depends so much more on my own attitude and preparation than on any outside factors. I’ve been wanting to get or make a print to hang in my bathroom reminding me each morning that “today is a good day to have a good day.”

  • Knowing there will be setbacks is something you need to let sink it. It can be really hard and hindsight is always 20:20. But, it is so important. Anything great will definitely be paired with obstacles and days where you feel like the universe is conspiring against you. But, it isn’t true! Just focus on what you CAN control. I am still working on that :).
