I’m too busy. I have kids. I work too much. It’s too expensive. I’m not in good enough shape to get started. I’m too old. I don’t even know where to begin. I ache ______. I’m already skinny. The list goes on, and on, and on, and onnnnnnn. If I missed any excuses please let me know!
So I’m not trying to come across as harsh, but today I wanted to address all of the reasons we seem to find to NOT to take care of ourselves. Whether it be keeping active, eating healthy or maintaining an overall healthier lifestyle, the excuses to not commit seem to be endless. There always seems to be a ‘better’ time to get started and it’s easy to fall into the “I’ll start Monday” trap. And when it comes to downright committing ourselves, we all seem to go running scared.
Today I want to help each one of you kick your excuses to the curb and tackle your life head-on. Whichever excuse you own, today it’s time to say goodbye to it, and hello to your commitment to a healthier lifestyle. I PROMISE you that whatever challenge you think you may have, we will overcome it together!
KICK YOUR EXCUSES TO THE CURB
I’m Too Busy/I Don’t Have Time
I put this as number one because it is absolutely the response I hear above all others. I get it; life is busy. We all have things going on, and we certainly don’t want to waste our lives away at the gym or running miles on end. However, if you have been following along with my personal journey, then you will know that all it takes to commit to a healthy lifestyle is approximately 30 minutes a day. I’m going to call you out right now if this is your excuse and say that I am CERTAIN you have 30 minutes a day to spare. If not, take a page out of my book and simply set your alarm 30 minutes earlier each day.
As far as the nutrition part of a healthier lifestyle, this also does not need to be time consuming. My best advice is to check out my meal prepping post and prepare as much in advance for the week as possible. This will help you to avoid those unhealthy convenience foods that pop up all over the place throughout your busy days.
I Have Kids
Welcome to the club. The ‘I have kids’ excuse is pretty expansive. Blame it on them taking up all of your time (see above if time is the issue). Maybe your kids are early risers… simply squeeze in that workout at bedtime, or better yet, do it while they are awake. Give them a quiet ‘busy’ activity to do such as reading, a puzzle or coloring while you are working out. They can watch alongside you and the bonus is you are setting an awesome example for them!
Maybe, just maybe, you fall into my category. ‘I have kids so my body is never going to be what it used to.’ I admit, from the moment I found out that I was pregnant, I happily accepted that life as I knew it in my current body was done, and I was ok with that. However, after having my son, I realized that I didn’t have to just accept it. I was still capable of making a change, and you are too! I am stronger, healthier, and more fit now than I have ever been. DO NOT think that you are any different; your only limitation is you. DO NOT make excuses, instead set goals! Having a baby does not take away your ability to live a healthier lifestyle and achieve your best body now.
I Work Too Much
I know, we all do… too much work and not enough play! Just see above under the ‘I’m Too Busy’ category.
It’s Too Expensive
So this one is two fold; gym memberships and workout programs are too expensive, and eating healthy is too expensive. Both of these reasons can, in fact, be true depending on where you are looking. Years ago, my husband and I were members to a gym that cost over $100 a month. Is that expensive??? Heck yes it is! However, there are also gyms out there that cost $10 a month. Better yet, I now workout exclusively at home with Beachbody for $99 a year, which equates to $.27 a day… that is NOT expensive; that’s pocket change.
As far as nutrition, yes, eating healthy CAN be expensive. However, if you are smart about it, it doesn’t need to be. Planning and preparing is key. Do your research. Spend a day or two perusing the local grocery stores; you will be shocked to see the variance in prices! Personally, I was devoted to one particular grocery store. However, once I began shopping around, I discovered that I could save $10, $20, $30 or more a week just by venturing outside of my usual grocery store bubble! Also, by specifically planning your meals, you can coordinate all ingredients so you end up with no waste each week.
I’m Not in Good Enough Shape to Get Started
This is another super common excuse that I hear. We are all in different stages of life, and different stages of our journeys. Please do not ever feel like you are not in ‘good enough shape’ to get started; that is the whole point! One of my favorite things about Beachbody is that it is absolutely designed for all fitness levels. This excuse should be your biggest motivation. We all have to start somewhere, and although it may be the hardest thing you have ever done in your life, I promise you that it will be worth it, and each day will get a little easier.

I’m Too Old
Ok kick that thought out of your head right now! I hate the term ‘I’m too old’ in any context! As long as you are alive, you are never ‘too old’ to try anything! Live your life to the fullest each and every day and don’t set limits on yourself based on your age. And trust me when I say that there is nothing out there that can make you feel more alive and recharged then a great workout and a healthy diet.
Even if it’s simply a walk around the block, there is always something active you can achieve each day, at any age. Again, I would be happy to help you dial in on what will work for you specifically!
I Don’t Even Know Where to Begin
Fair enough, I’ve been there, too. Starting out can be daunting, whether it’s healthy eating or exercise. Fortunately these days we have Pinterest and endless options, especially on the side of diet.
Exercise can be a bit more intimidating. Walking into the gym, with lines of machines and all of the ‘experts’ working out can scare anyone off. Trying at home can be even worse… what can you possibly do that can be effective from the comfort of your own home???
Let me tell you, this is where Beachbody can be a total lifesaver for fitness novices and experts alike. Simply read up on the different programs, find one that sounds appealing to you, and leave the rest to the experts! You will be provided with an exact workout calendar and meal plan, all you need to do is follow it for the best results! Personally, I have been active much of my life, but never seem to quite know what to do myself. This is where Beachbody has been invaluable to me, I need direction and that is exactly what I get!
I Ache ______
Fill in the blank on this one. We all have them; those dull aches and pains that seem to never go away. My best advice on this one is to check with your doctor first and find a program that works for your body. You will be amazed how a little bit of exercise can go a long way. As you strengthen your body, you may also find that your usual aches and pains slowly subside.
Even if your body limitations simply do not allow for much in the way of physical activity now, there is absolutely ZERO reason that you can’t start on a healthy nutrition plan in the meantime.
I’m Already Skinny
I used to fall victim to this one too. I wasn’t overweight so I simply did not prioritize my health. However, just because you are ‘skinny’ does not mean that you are ‘healthy.’ And as you age, your body will start to show signs of this. In order to live your best life now and always, it is imperative that you take care of yourself, inside and out.
