21 Day Fix Extreme: How to Get Your BEST Body NOW!

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping back at This Healthy House!  So as promised, today will be all about my personal results from my current fitness program.  And let me tell you, I could not be more excited to share them with all of you

So as you may or may not have read previously, I had decided to take a break from running and revisit my old friend, Beachbody.  If you’re not already familiar, Beachbody is a company designed to help bring you the tools needed to achieve a healthier lifestyle with longevity in mind.  It’s not all about quick fixes and temporary solutions.  There are no ‘end’ dates; which is one of my favorite things about Beachbody; if you finish one program, there’s always something new to try next!  For more on the long term, sustainable benefits of Beachbody, be sure to check out my original post.

21 Day Fix Extreme

Anyhow, today is all about my personal results!  Diving back into Beachbody, I decided to kick start my new lifestyle with one of their ‘bread and butter’ programs; 21 Day Fix with trainer Autumn Calabrese.  There are two versions of this program; the original 21 Day Fix, and 21 Day Fix Extreme.  The Extreme is designed for people who are already somewhat fit and wanting to push their limits.  Coming off of my half marathon and months of training, I decided to go Extreme.

21 Day Fix Extreme

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT???

  • 7 different workouts for each day of the week, with a different focus each day
  • 3o minutes each day
  • An easy to follow meal plan
  • A free app for tracking
  • A variety of healthy recipe options
  • 21 days (I think this is kind of obvious based on the name… but ya never know!)

The Workouts

So as I mentioned, there are 7 different workouts with this program, as in 7 days a week.  Yes, I know, no rest day???  Say what???  Listen, the program is only 21 days and designed to kick your booty into shape; what do you expect???  Plus, they are only 30 minutes a day.  Anyhow, Sundays are for yoga, so it is an ‘active rest’ day; you do get a bit of a break.

truth

Here’s a breakdown for you:

Plyo Fix Extreme. An explosive lower-body workout that uses jumping and resistance to torch calories and sculpt muscles.

Ok, so plyo anything is not my fave, but it sure gives you results in a hurry!  (I’m looking at you, Insanity!)  If you’re not familiar, plyo is all about speed and jumping!  Factor in the ‘extreme’ version and you get hand weights added into the mix.  I must say, I’ve never added weights to plyo before, and I was FEELING THE BURN for days!  What I loved was how quick the rounds were and how quickly the 30 minutes passed by!  So despite it all, I think Plyo Extreme was my favorite; ya know, a love/hate thing.

Upper Fix Extreme. By alternating opposing muscle groups, this no-rest upper-body workout will help shred your chest, back, shoulders, and arms.

All about upper body today, people!  Not a lot to say, but an overall great workout, using weights again.  And of course, only 30 minutes!

Pilates Fix Extreme. Using a resistance band for every exercise, this intense mat workout works the entire body, placing emphasis on the core.

Pilates was a good one.  What stood out to me versus other pilates workouts that I have done is that you use a resistance band for the entire 30 minute workout.  So although you’re not running and jumping all crazy the whole time, those muscles are WORKING!

Lower Fix Extreme. Glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves will get stronger, leaner, and more defined with challenging resistance work.

Lower body is great because it keeps your body burning calories ALL day long!  Plus nothing beats that, “I don’t think I can make it up the stairs” feeling!

Cardio Fix Extreme. Combining weighted cardio moves with traditional metabolic training intervals keeps your heart rate soaring.

Cardio Fix Extreme was similar to Plyo Extreme in that you are moving the whole time, with the added challenge of using weights.  Not quite as much jumping but still an awesome workout.

Dirty Thirty Extreme.  It’s a down and dirty workout featuring seven compound moves that target multiple muscle groups simultaneously, to help you develop integrated strength and incredible definition.

This is your big Saturday, end of the week, culmination workout.   You take a little bit from each day of the week and combine it into an all-out sweat fest.  This was probably the runner up for my favorite 21 DFX workout.

Yoga Fix Extreme. A fast-paced flow yoga class, combining strength, balance, flexibility, and power.

Ok, you love yoga or you hate it.  Most people love it.  Me, I get a little bored.  My mind wanders WAY too much.  But yoga is in there for an active recovery day, so it’s nice to get a bit of a break.  Don’t get me wrong, there was nothing functionally wrong with Yoga Fix, I’m just not a big yoga fan in general.  Most people love this day of the workout, so don’t let me deter you!

Meal Plan

Meal Prepping Feature

So this is where I notoriously struggle.  Don’t get me wrong.  I don’t eat like a complete garbage disposal or anything.  In general, I try to eat relatively healthy and make good choices.  However, I never know how much of everything I should be getting each day.  I need a plan.  I need direction.  I need STRUCTURE.

Enter the 21 DFX meal plan.  If you opt for the 21 DFX Challenge Pack, you will get everything you need for this.  Nutrition could not be made any more simple.  You will be provided with those cute, color coded containers that I’m sure you’ve seen before to help you portion out your food for each day.  Each color has a corresponding food group:

21dfx Meal Plan
All of the ingredients for a successful nutrition plan…

Green—Veggies
Purple—Fruits
Red—Proteins
Yellow—Carbs
Blue—Healthy Fats
Orange—Seeds & Dressings

Simply calculate your current weight, enter your goal (weight loss, maintain, etc.) and you can automatically compute how many servings of each container you should eat each day.  There is then a list of ‘acceptable’ foods for each container.  That’s it; simple!  Follow these recommendations and I promise that you will be successful!

Recipes

So now you know how much you can be eating, and what types of foods, but you’re out of ideas on how to create meals with all of it.  No worries!  The included 21 Day Fix Extreme Eating Plan has plenty of suggestions, there is also a Fixate Cook Book by trainer Autumn Calabrese available, and if you subscribe to Beachbody On Demand there is even a cooking show to watch!  And of course, there are ENDLESS 21 DFX recipes out there on Pinterest.

Free Tracking App

This app is seriously a life saver!  Although you could use good old fashioned pen and paper for your tracking, I prefer the app.  Especially convenient for when you are on the go!  It’s simply called the 21 Day Fix Tracker.  It can be used for the 21 Day Fix or Extreme version.

The app breaks down Fix approved foods (a handy reference if you’re out and about and can’t remember), a Transformation Tracker to enter start and end results as well as a daily tracker that you can use to track workouts, food and water intake.  There is also ‘maintenance mode’ for when you have completed the program but want to continue the eating plan.

DOES IT WORK???

Ok, so everything sounds all good and well, but time for the obvious question; does it work???  Can you possibly make any physical changes to your body in a mere 21 days???

If it doesn't challenge you it doesn't change you

I will let my results speak for themselves:

Weight:  -6.2 pounds (4.2% total body weight)

Inches:  -9.5 inches (4.7% total inches)

I wanted to break down not only the numbers, but the percentages as well so you could truly understand the significance of my results.  Let me tell you friends, IT WORKS!  These results are nothing short of amazing.  No killing myself for hours a day, no starving myself, no crazy pills or detoxes.  Simply 30 minutes of hard work a day and a healthy meal plan that includes 3 meals and 2 snacks every day.  It may sound too good to be true, but it’s not!

Now for some other burning questions you skeptics may have…

Was I terribly out of shape and inactive to start with???

No.  Prior to starting the program, I had just completed my 4th half marathon, which included running 350 miles in the 4 months leading up to race day.  Technically speaking, I should have been in the best shape of my life already.  (which I clearly was not)

Did I eat like a human garbage disposal before the program???

No.  While I was not the healthiest eater on the planet, I certainly wasn’t the worst.  I would say I was at a 70/30 healthy eating ratio, my main bugaboo being sweets.  I also don’t have a huge appetite so portion control was definitely not an issue!  So yes, I did clean up my eating a bit, which has certainly helped, but I still try to keep the balance.  I definitely indulged in a weekly trip to the ice cream shop with my family even during the program!  Life is all about balance, friends!

Did I ‘pad my stats’ prior to weigh in’s???

Well I hope this really isn’t even a question, but no, I did not gorge on pizza and ice cream the night before I started, and I certainly didn’t not starve myself prior to final weigh in.  These results are 100% real.

Did this only work for you because you are a stay-at-home mom and have lot’s of time to devote to the program???

Ha!  Don’t make me laugh!  Ok but seriously, I wish this was true.  I’m not even going to touch the ‘stay-at-home mom’s don’t work’ debate; if you want to get into that, please read my post all about it.

You want to know about life???  Try chasing a toddler all day, cleaning the house every single day, doing laundry at least every other day, cooking every single day, planning activities for said toddler each day so he’s not stuck staring at a wall all day while you get the chores done, staying on top of household duties such as bills and groceries, running a website, getting your house ready to sell, getting OUT of the house with a kid and a dog every time a showing is scheduled, packing to move… the list goes on and on, and I know I’m not the only one out there.  The point is, we all have LIFE happening.

Here’s how I make it work:  I set my alarm for 30 minutes earlier each day to get my workout in before anyone wakes up.  That’s it.  As far as nutrition goes, I try to be mindful in my planning each week.  If you need help with this, please read my previous post!  I’m not special, I’m not super woman, I simply take a mere 30 minutes extra a day to commit to myself.  Honestly, if you think you don’t have ‘time’ to do this, you are only lying to yourself.  Sorry to be harsh, but it’s so true!

Commit to Yourself
